Strong earthquake hits Sri Lanka ; tremors felt in Colombo
Sri Lanka experienced a significant earthquake measuring 6.2 in magnitude on Tuesday (14 November) afternoon, as reported by the National Center for Seismology- India. The earthquake, with its epicetnre located at a latitude of -2.96 and longitude of 86.54, occurred at a depth of 10 km. An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 hit the Indian Ocean on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.
According to the US agency, the earthquake, with its epicenter in the southern Indian Ocean, struck at around 0700GMT.
Its depth was recorded at nearly 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
The seismic event was situated 1,326 km southeast of Colombo, Sri Lanka, as per the NCS’s announcement on social media. Despite the intenstiy of the earthquake, there are no immediate reports of casualties.
The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau has assured that there is no imminent danger to Sri Lanka, given that the earthquake took place 800 km southeast of the coutnry in the Indian Ocean, at a depth of 10 km.
The earthquake came days after a major earthquake of 6.4 magnitude hit the South Asian nation of Nepal. Around 150 people were killed following the strong tremor in the landlocked Himalayan nation.
Meanwhile, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau said that the earthquake has been recorded nearly 800 km Southeast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean and that there was no danger to Sri Lanka due to the earthquake.
