Storm Goretti batters northern Europe, leaving millions of homes in darkness, bringing life to a standstill

Storm Goretti has battered Europe. Storm 'Goretti' is wreaking havoc in northern Europe with its strong winds and heavy snowfall. Life in countries such as France, Britain, Germany and the Netherlands has come to a complete standstill. Thousands of passengers have been left stranded as road, rail and air traffic has been disrupted. 

Many homes in darkness

In France alone, more than 380,000 homes are in darkness. Around 57,000 homes in Scotland and central England in Britain have lost power. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports due to strong winds and icy runways. Around 50 planes were unable to land at Heathrow alone.

Train services disrupted, schools closed

Train services were completely disrupted on the Sheffield and Manchester routes in England. Several services have been cancelled in Germany and France for safety reasons. Schools have been closed in many countries due to the adverse weather.

Cautionary advice

Authorities have strictly advised people not to go out except for essential needs. Rescue operations are also facing difficulties due to continued snowfall and strong winds. The storm has also severely affected major tourist destinations in Europe. Reports indicate that the weather will continue to be bad in the coming days.
