weather 06/01/26:  “Low” Formed; Heavy Rainfall Expected for Sri Lanka and South Tamilnadu

COLOMBO/CHENNAI January 6, 2026 : Meteorological departments have issued urgent warnings as a powerful atmospheric disturbance intensifies in the Southwest Bay of Bengal. Visual data from current satellite and pressure models confirm that a  Low-Pressure Area is now churning southeast of Sri Lanka, tthreatening to bring extreme weather to the region over the next 72 hours. This system to intensify into a Well Marked Low and then into a Depression during the next 3 days.

The Current Situation: A Region Under Pressure

As of this morning, a significant low-pressure system (centered at 1007 hPa) has anchored itself near the equatorial Indian Ocean. The impact is already being felt across the coastlines:

Saturated Air

Humidity levels in South Tamilnadu have spiked to a staggering 80%, with Sri Lanka reporting 80-90%, indicating an atmosphere primed for heavy downpours.

Trough Activity

A "trough in easterlies" (represented by the yellow pressure lines in the forecast maps for 9th Jan) is going to act as a conveyor belt, dragging massive amounts of moisture toward the Tamil Nadu coast.

The Forecast: 48-Hour Impact Window

Tracking data shows the system moving in a North-Northwest trajectory, placing it directly on a collision course with the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent by January 9th.

Sri Lanka (Jan 7–9)

A Red Alert has been issued for the Northern, Eastern, and Central provinces. Rainfall is expected to exceed 100 mm in localized areas. Authorities warn of potential flash floods and landslides in the central hills as winds gust up to 55 km/h.

South India (Jan 9–10)

An Orange Alert is in effect for several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Ramanathapuram and Pudukottai districts. The ECMWF precipitation model (Image 3) predicts a "rainfall bullseye" over the region, with extreme 24-hour totals likely to disrupt travel and daily life. Chennai and suburbs, Villupuram, Pondicherry, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts, Sivagangai, Madurai, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli has chance for light to moderate rainfall from 09th to 10th Jan.
