Heavy Rain and Severe Hailstorm Hit South Punjab; Wheat Crops and Solar Systems Damaged
Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and hailstorms over the past two days has caused widespread damage across South Punjab. The worst-affected areas include Multan, Muzaffargarh, Kot Adu, and Layyah.
Major Setback to Agriculture
The hailstorm severely impacted wheat crops. Farmers in Muzaffargarh and Kot Adu reported significant losses, as hailstones directly struck fields, damaging crops and ruining harvest expectations. Similar agricultural damage has also been reported in Layyah district.
Damage to Solar Panels and Property
Residents reported that solar panels installed in homes and for agricultural use were damaged due to the hailstorm. The impact of hailstones broke panels and disrupted electricity generation. Solar-powered agricultural tubewell systems also suffered major damage.
Power Supply Disrupted
Strong winds and heavy rain caused electric poles to collapse, leading to widespread power outages. Many rural and urban areas experienced load shedding for up to 24 hours.
In Alipur, several electric poles were reported to have fallen. Authorities stated that restoration work is currently underway.
High Alert in Multan
In Multan, continuous rainfall from Thursday night into Friday prompted the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to declare a high alert.
All disposal stations were instructed to operate at full capacity to strengthen drainage operations. Efforts are ongoing across the city to prevent waterlogging in low-lying areas and major roads.
Rainfall Data
Recorded rainfall in different parts of Multan includes:
• Kadi Jamandan: 24 mm
• Old Shujabad Road: 13 mm
• Suraj Miani: 10 mm
• Chungi No. 9: 7 mm
• Khan Village: 4.4 mm
Rain in Lahore
Lahore also experienced thunderstorms. Trees were uprooted in several areas, and solar panels were damaged.
Rainfall also affected Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches, with one game delayed due to a wet outfield.
More Rain Expected
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met Office) has warned of further rainfall across parts of Punjab. Farmers have been advised to take precautionary measures.
The combination of heavy rain and hailstorms has caused significant damage to agriculture and power infrastructure in South Punjab. While authorities are intensifying rescue and restoration efforts, continued vigilance is necessary as more adverse weather is expected in the coming days.
