Upper central North Island is likely to have significant rainfall and violent thunderstorms on Sunday night and early Saturday.

On Sunday night, Metservice issued a severe thunderstorm warning from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. for the Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Rotorua.

Over the northern and central parts of the North Island, an active front was heading southeast, with the potential for heavy rain that might create surface flooding.

In addition to hail, frequent lighting, and squally wind gusts of 90 to 100 kph, these thunderstorms may also deliver.
