At least 26 people had died as a result of a powerful storm system that pounded the south-central and eastern United States with damaging winds and tornadoes as of Sunday, according to authorities.
According to Memphis-based news channel WREG, Tennessee, one of the hardest-hit states since the storms started Friday, originally had seven weather-related fatalities, but the number later increased to nine.The Tennessee tornado, which flattened homes into mounds of wood planks and tore walls from still-standing structures, left scenes of destruction in its wake.
Janice Pieterick, whose home doors and glass windows blew out when the tornado swept through Lewis County, said, “The whole house, you can feel it shaking.”
“We simply dug in together.”
The 17 fatalities recorded in Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, the South, the Midwest (Indiana and Illinois), and the Mid-Atlantic (Delaware) were added to by the death toll in Tennessee.

The storm system harmed numerous people.
At least five people were killed in the numerous tornadoes that were sent sweeping through Arkansas, according to the governor of the state, some of which were of exceptional size and strength.

The Apollo Theater’s roof and a portion of its facade collapsed while a heavy metal band was performing inside on Friday, bringing tragedy to the Illinois community of Belvidere outside of Chicago.
While social media videos showed the venue’s floor covered in waist-high debris and a gaping hole in the roof, television footage showed medical staff transporting injured concertgoers on stretchers.
Shawn Schadle, the fire chief for Belvidere, Illinois, reported one fatality and 28 injuries, five of which required hospitalisation due to seriousness.
According to Kevin Sur, spokesperson for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, three people perished when a house collapsed in Crawford County, in southern Illinois, presumably as a result of a tornado.
