Powerful Earthquake Strikes Japan, Triggering Tsunami Warning

Powerful Earthquake Strikes Japan. A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan, triggering a tsunami warning. The quake hit the island of Kyushu in southern Japan, with preliminary reports indicating a magnitude of 6.9.

A tsunami warning has been issued for western Miyazaki, with waves expected to reach over one meter high on the southern coast. According to the Japan Meteorological Department, the earthquake occurred 30 km below the sea surface. A special task force has been deployed to address the aftermath.

Japan, the world’s most earthquake-prone nation, has implemented robust building codes to minimize damage and casualties. Despite having a population of 125 million, the country experiences approximately 1,500 earthquakes annually.

This recent quake follows a devastating earthquake on January 1, which claimed 260 lives. Japan’s strongest earthquake on record occurred in March 2011, with a magnitude of 9.0. The resulting tsunami killed 18,500 people and affected three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, causing a leak.
