Big Winter Storm Hits US: 14 People Die, Over 1,000 Rescued in One Day
A powerful winter storm has brought devastating consequences to the central and eastern United States, claiming the lives of at least 14 individuals. The National Weather Service has issued a warning for a winter storm system that is expected to bring record-low temperatures, with wind chill values plummeting to as low as -60 degrees Fahrenheit in Montana and North Dakota.
Kentucky has been severely affected, with the death toll rising to 12, according to Governor Andy Beshear. The victims include a mother and her child, who tragically drowned in their vehicle due to rapidly rising floodwaters. Governor Beshear has urged citizens to avoid traveling on roads, as local and federal authorities have declared a state of emergency.
In addition to the fatalities in Kentucky, West Virginia has reported at least one death, and Georgia has reported one fatality, where an individual was killed by a falling tree. Over 1,000 people have been rescued by first responders within a 24-hour period.
The National Weather Service has warned that the cold weather system will impact a vast area, causing temperatures to drop significantly in the central plains, eastern seaboard, and Gulf coast. Thousands of homes have been left without power, with over 50,000 customers still affected in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
