WELLINGTON : A major polar blast has slammed into New Zealand, bringing heavy alpine snow, damaging gale-force winds, and torrential rain across both islands. The multi-peril winter storm has triggered widespread infrastructure damage, power outages, and unprecedented traffic enforcement on critical southern passes.

The heavy snow accumulation has forced the closure of the Crown Range Road in the South Island, along with State Highway 85 between Lauder and Wedderburn.
For the first time under the newly active Traffic and Parking Bylaw, the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and NZ Police are strictly enforcing a $750 fine for motorists who fail to fit snow chains when "Chains Required" signage is active or when directed by officials.

Vehicles abandoned or stuck in the snow have repeatedly blocked snowplows and gritters in previous winters. This enforcement is critical to keeping alpine routes moving safely," stated QLDC asset management. The mandate applies to all council-managed roads, including the access routes leading to popular ski fields like Coronet Peak.

Ski Fields Rebound with Fresh Powder

While the storm has created hazardous driving conditions, South Island ski resorts are celebrating a massive winter dump just ahead of the weekend:
Coronet Peak: Reported 12 cm of fresh snow within the last 24 hours.
The Remarkables: Recorded approximately 10 cm of snow accumulation, with operations expected to open smoothly on Saturday.

However, transport officials warn that local bus networks are facing severe delays as crews work to fit mandatory chains across entire fleets.

Aviation and Maritime Transit Gridlocked

In the capital, severe weather has caused immense travel disruptions. Over 200 flights have been cancelled at Wellington Airport due to low visibility and severe turbulence cutting across Wellington, Taranaki, and Marlborough.

Thousands of passengers are stranded, scrambling to rebook flights. Air New Zealand has confirmed that operations will remain grounded and will only resume "when it is entirely safe to fly." Cook Strait ferry services have also been suspended due to dangerous swells.

Damaging Winds, Power Outages, and Civil Warnings

According to MetService, destructive wind gusts peaked at a howling 137 km/h at Cape Reinga early this morning. The storm has taken a severe toll on regional infrastructure:

Power Grid Failures: Roughly 3,500 properties are currently without power across the Wellington region, Porirua, and Hutt Valley.

School Closures: Heavy snow accumulation forced all schools across the Otago region to close their doors today.

Severe Injuries: In New Plymouth, emergency services responded to a critical incident where an uprooted tree crushed a vehicle, leaving one person severely injured.
