Meanwhile, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara urged residents to seek shelter in higher ground until the warnings were lifted. About 800 homes were without power, and Shinkansen bullet trains and some local trains were suspended in parts of the region, Minoru said.

Tsunami warning issued on Twitter

A tsunami warning has also been issued for Japan's east coast, the Cabinet Office's disaster management agency said on Twitter. Currently, tsunami warnings have been issued for the central Pacific coast of Hokkaido and the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture, the agency said.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 80 kilometers from Aomori. The epicenter is known to be 50 kilometers deep. The powerful earthquake shook northern and eastern parts of Japan. It prompted tsunami warnings and evacuation orders for residents along the coast. Disaster response forces are working quickly.
