Hard Work Behind the Achievement

Despite the challenges posed by persistent heatwaves and drought, the farmers’ relentless efforts made these remarkable achievements possible.

Records were set in several categories, including the largest pumpkin, heaviest beetroot, heaviest sunflower and heaviest corn, among other giant produce.

A 23.5-Kilogram Pumpkin Steals the Show

A total of 597 entries across 33 categories, submitted by 169 growers, competed at this year’s show. Steve Harris, who grew a pumpkin weighing 23.5 kilograms, secured the Guinness World Record for the largest pumpkin. Vincent Szodin claimed two records with a 26.02-kilogram beetroot and a sunflower weighing 7.808 kilograms.

Graham Barrett also achieved a record with a cucumber plant measuring approximately 7.598 metres in length. Peter Glazebrook attracted attention with corn weighing 0.408 kilograms. Other records were set for an exceptionally long tromboncino vegetable and a luffa fruit.

Maggie Walter from Plymouth was another highlight of the show. She grew an aubergine weighing 3.95 kilograms and received prize money of £1,000 from the event.

Extreme Heat and Drought Pose Double Challenge for Farmers

Behind these record-breaking achievements lies a story of struggle and perseverance. The intense summer heat created serious challenges for farmers growing giant vegetables. Without sufficient water, the plants risked drying out, while excessive watering could cause pumpkins and other produce to split.

Farmers said they had to provide more than 20 litres of water daily to protect crops such as cassava and yardlong beans. According to the grower who cultivated the giant pumpkin, keeping the plants alive while preventing the produce from splitting was a delicate balancing act.

Farmers described this year’s weather as dangerously hot. Despite giving their plants extra attention and supplying adequate water and fertiliser, many crops ripened before the show, they said.

Even amid extreme heat and drought, the farmers’ achievements have captured the attention of the agricultural community worldwide. The giant vegetables, grown through determination and hard work despite adverse weather conditions, once again turned the Malvern Autumn Show into a spectacular display of agricultural excellence.
