Earthquake 04/04/2024: Magnitude 6.3 earthquake hits east coast of Japan; Tsunami Warning
A 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan, followed by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in Japan. A tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake. A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Japan’s Honshu on Thursday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center said.
The quake was at a depth of 32 kilometers (19.88 miles), EMCC said. No damage or injuries were immediately reported after the quake. The epicenter is 40 km (25 mi) deep. The tremors were also felt in Tokyo. Tepco, the operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, said it had “not detected any abnormalities” at the plant or other areas affected by the accident.
The United States Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred at a depth of 40.1 km on Thursday. At the same time, nine people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in a powerful earthquake in Taiwan.
Japan’s largest earthquake was a massive 9.0 earthquake off the northeast coast of Japan in March 2011. This triggered a tsunami that killed or left 18,500 people missing.
The 2011 disaster affected three reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. It caused Japan’s worst post-war disaster and the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl.
The total cost is estimated at 16.9 trillion yen ($112 billion).
