Climate Change Impacts Salt Production; Concern Grows in the Country’s Salt Pans, Will Salt Become Scarce?

We do not eat any meal without salt in our daily lives. Salt has become an indispensable part of our lives. However, the salt we use to enhance the taste of food is now raising serious concerns over production in the country. The main reason for this is global climate change. New reports indicate that climate change is adversely affecting salt production. Reports emerging from the country’s salt pans highlight the growing concern.

Sunlight Is an Essential Factor

Most of the salt produced in the country is made through solar evaporation. In this process, seawater or underground brine is pumped into large, shallow ponds in salt pans. Under strong sunlight, the water gradually evaporates, leaving behind sodium chloride crystals. The salt is then collected, processed, and graded before being sent to the market.

However, climate is now becoming a major challenge. Salt production through this process requires prolonged dry weather and strong sunlight. But changing weather patterns caused by climate change are now affecting the traditional salt-production process.

Rain and Flooding Affect Salt Production

Changing weather conditions are becoming a major obstacle to salt production. Heavy rainfall just before harvesting reduces the concentration of saltwater. This disrupts the evaporation process and delays production. Strong rains can also wash away salt crystals.

Prolonged monsoon conditions can cause water to accumulate in salt pans, further affecting production. Powerful cyclones occurring in coastal regions can also cause significant damage to salt pans.

India Ranks Third

India ranks third among the world’s largest salt-producing countries. The country is estimated to produce around 30.7 million tonnes of salt annually. A major share of India’s total salt production comes from Gujarat. The Little Rann of Kutch in particular is one of the country’s major salt-producing regions.

If climate change continues to affect Gujarat, salt production could decline. In other words, prolonged rainfall in Gujarat could adversely affect salt pans, creating concerns not only for the domestic market but also for global salt supplies. Experts have also pointed out that this could potentially affect the availability and prices of salt in the future.

Hope Lies in New Technology

Efforts are underway to develop new technologies that can increase salt production and accelerate the evaporation process even under adverse weather conditions. Institutions including the Central Chemical Research Institute are engaged in research related to these technologies. However, how practical and effective these technologies will be remains to be seen in the coming days.
