Bahrain Strengthens Rainy Season Preparations; 565 Potential Waterlogging Hotspots Identified

Bahrain has stepped up preparations for the rainy season, with a high-level meeting held to prevent waterlogging, ensure emergency readiness and strengthen infrastructure. The meeting focused on taking precautionary measures in advance and coordinating efforts among various government departments.

The meeting was held at the office of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak. Public Works Minister Ibrahim Al Hawaj and the chairpersons of municipal councils from the country’s four governorates also attended.

Authorities have identified 565 locations across Bahrain’s four governorates that are vulnerable to waterlogging. Special priority will be given to addressing problems at 221 key locations requiring particular attention.

Southern Municipal Council Chairman Abdullah Abdul Latif said the necessary precautionary measures had already been taken in his governorate. Plans are also underway to establish an emergency operations room at Mahzoora Avenue. A total of 63 water pumps and 31 water tankers have been prepared to tackle waterlogging.

Emergency maintenance teams will be kept ready to respond to waterlogging at 110 locations across the governorate. Regular inspections will also be carried out, with 25 of these locations identified as being in more serious condition, he said.

Abdul Latif also proposed an awareness campaign to educate residents about safety measures during the rainy season. He warned the public not to open manhole covers during rainfall under any circumstances.

The meeting stressed the importance of coordination among various government departments to ensure the smooth and rapid drainage of rainwater and minimise the risk of waterlogging.
